From the Principal

A place of learning

Schools are such fun places to be with students sharing their character and enthusiasm for learning every day.  At Grace, the staff work hard to scaffold and support our students to learn and grow but even from our youngest students we also expect a certain independence from them too.  We try not to rescue students and we celebrate with them when they have figured out problems on their own or when they demonstrate learning in a variety of ways in their school day.

At Grace the teachers do an enormous amount of data collection behind the scenes and after the data is collected the achievement of every student is discussed individually with collaborative teaching teams and also with the Deputy Teaching and Learning, Mrs Jasmine Deighton.  Data is collected on reading, spelling and also mathematics proficiency.  Teachers also gather anecdotal information and more formal assessment tasks about students in their other subject areas so that reports can be prepared for parents every semester.

Most parents would have signed up to the interactive APP we use – See-Saw. On this device we show students doing work at school so that you can see their progress during the term too.   We also load the weekly homework on this APP for students so that you can know what is expected of your child at home.

A place of friendship

At Grace we run specific social emotional programs to ensure the development of empathetic and kind students who show friendship to one another.  The major program we run is called Play is the Way.  Our teachers and teacher aides undertake regular training with the company which organizes the program.  There are six ‘life rafts’ in Play is the Way and they are -:

  1. Be brave to participate
  2. Pursue your personal best no matter who you work with
  3. Treat others as you would like them to treat you
  4. Have reasons for the things you say and do
  5. It takes great strength to be sensible
  6. Be the master, not the victim of your feelings.

In age appropriate ways by using games and discussion, we unpack these concepts so students learn ways to interact with one other which are positive and affirming.  Other programs we use are restorative practices, a daily devotional and circle time where students can discuss issues amongst themselves whilst being supported by a teacher.

Grace Primary is a wonderful school filled with amazing students and I thank all parents for the support which is given every day in preparing your children to participate to their fullest in all our programs.

Aladdin – Sponsorship & castings

Sponsorship

We are grateful for the generous sponsorship of Kindred for this year’s musical.  They have taken out the major sponsorship at Aladdin level.  Thank you also to the Ungun family whose business Proseat Auto Aircraft Marine Interior Centre have taken out Genie level sponsorship.  If you would like to also help fund our musical, Aladdin Junior which will be held at the  Redcliffe Entertainment Centre on the 10th and 11 of June, please see the information loaded below.  All funds will help keep the ticket costs low for our general school community and will also support a fantastic team who are working hard on the musical already to create sets, props and costuming which will be at a dazzling level.

Thank you KINDRED for being our major sponsor for our musical!
This year Kindred will have naming rights for Aladdin Jnr.

Thank you Proseat Auto Aircraft Marine Interior Centre for being our Genie sponsor.

Aladdin Casting!

After a delightful day of auditions in the first week of school, our panel of enthusiastic (and dressed in characters) teachers spent many hours discussing and celebrating the gifts and talents of our passionate students.  Our cast have begun rehearsals, spending lots of time at the piano with our teachers and starting to dissect our scripts!

We are thrilled to announce our cast to the broader school community.

Didjeribone Show – Harmony Day Celebrations

On Monday March 21st, we are celebrating and learning about Harmony Day. On the day, the students will be partaking in engaging and hands-on learning opportunities and activities that will help them to understand the culturally diverse country we live in. Harmony Day, which is observed each year on March 21, celebrates this diversity, aiming to foster inclusiveness, respect and the idea that people of all different cultures can make a valuable contribution to society. And our society is stronger, richer and more interesting because of this.”

As part of our Harmony Day celebrations, we are very excited to have Tjupurru who will be presenting the students with the Didjeribone Show. Tjupurru is a Queensland Indigenous performer, whose ancestors are from the Djabera Djabera country in WA. The Didjeribone Show with Tjupurru presents a seamless entertaining and educational exploration of the ancient didgeridoo and modern technology. Tjupurru captivates students with his extraordinary live interactive performance, which enables students to develop a wider appreciation for traditional and cultural arts whilst students are introduced to the amazing world of modern music technologies.

Dance News!

This year has seen our largest enrolments in dance yet!  We have over 280 individual enrolments in various dance classes over many genres. This year we have extended our offerings to include the following genres:

  • Ballet (both performance troupes and examination classes)
  • Jazz (both performance troupes and examination classes)
  • Hip Hop
  • Contemporary (both performance troupe and examination class)
  • Acro combined with Cheer!
  • Prep Dance Classes (we have two troupes to ensure no student misses out…yes, there are a few places left in both of these troupes!)

Please note that enrolments for troupes has closed and students are being measured for their costumes.  We do however, have a few spots left in our Grade 1 Jazz Examination class.  This examination class is open to students who are already in our Grade 1 Jazz Troupe and would like to start working on their CTSD syllabus work.

Examination classes cover specific skills and exercises as well as a technical dance and a performance dance. The dance examiner comes to our school when our students are ready to sit their exam, they go into their exam together and when they have achieved their exam they receive a badge and certificate to celebrate their achievement. Exams are a great way to extend students who enjoy dance and are finding their troupe choreography to be at the right level for them.

If your child is currently enrolled in Grade 1 Jazz Dance Troupe (Tuesdays with Miss Aly) and would like to join the jazz exam class or your Prep student would like to enrol in Prep Dance, please email performingarts@glps.qld.edu.au

Please note that all other examination classes and troupes are FULL!

PRE-PREP Dance

Performing Arts @ GLPS is pleased to announce that we have availability for children from 3-5 years of age who are not yet enrolled in school, to join our Pre-Prep Acro Class on a Tuesday morning from 8:30 – 9:15am with Miss Bec. These classes are open to children in the broader community (you do not need to be a Grace Family).  To enrol in this class, please email performingarts@glps.qld.edu.au

Grade 2 and 3 Immersion News

Congratulations to all of our Grade 2 and 3 students on a great start to their Instrumental Immersion Programs.  All students in Grade 2 and 3 at learn an instrument, ensuring they are building a bigger better brain, collaborating with their peers, engaging in making music and experiencing a whole new world (Aladdin pun intended!).

Grade 2 students are required to practice 5-10 minutes per day and are encouraged to use the videos posted on SeeSaw to facilitate their practice. Please think of these videos as our teachers guiding your child’s practice and helping parents follow along what detailed work we are looking for.

Grade 3 students are required to practice 10 minutes per day and in Term 1 are focussing on putting their instruments together, getting out a basic sound and will start on simple exercises from their method books.  In Term 2, we will start joining up to create our two Grade 3 Ensembles; String Ensemble and Concert Band.

Happy practicing and don’t forget to bring your instruments and music every MONDAY for your lessons with our tutors!
