From the Principal

A well-balanced education

At Grace Lutheran Primary School, we work very hard to provide a well-balanced education for the students.  This month, we have been excited to see the Cross Country and Athletics carnivals at District and NISSA levels and our new netball teams and volleyball team have competed strongly in competitions outside of our school community.  Learning a language, Japanese is important and I love seeing the students at STEM tinkering with projects and working out problems as they collaborate together to create all sorts of interesting items.  Our Performing Arts program provides a rich diversity of opportunities for our students and of course its highlight is the biennial musical which will be enjoyed on 10 and 11 June this year.

The specialist subjects are designed to be diverse and complimentary to the learning done in the classroom – Numeracy, Literacy, Christian Education and Integrated studies.  At Grace there is something to peak an interest for every student and some are surprised by their engagement in a subject that possibly hasn’t interested them in the past.

This term, we have been particularly hard hit by illness amongst our staff and student body but I do want to thank our specialist staff who stepped in to support classroom teachers who were absent due to illness.  The relief staff also have been difficult to obtain as there is staff shortages in teaching something I am sure many parents will understand due to staff shortages in their workplaces too. Sometimes, the specialist staff were given just a few minutes’ notice that their day was completely upheaved. The balance these specialist staff give to the classroom teachers’ work is important and so we have kept note of any lessons missed to catch them up in the coming weeks as the staff illness begins to settle and we can return to normal.

Year Seven enrolment at Grace Lutheran College

Parents are reminded that if they are intending to enrol at Grace Lutheran College in Year 7, it is not an automatic enrolment.  Our schools are administered separately so you need to fill in an application form for your child to secure a place.  Students at Grace Lutheran Primary School have priority over other students but if the College does not know about your child and the cohort fills, you will miss out on a place.  We received the following message from the College this week and include it in Ripples for your attention

Year 7 places for 2023 at Grace Lutheran College are filling up fast! For those parents/guardians wishing to secure a Year 7 enrolment at the College in 2023, it is extremely important that you lodge your enrolment application by no later than Friday, 10 June 2022. To enrol, go to glc.qld.edu.au and click the “Enrol Now” button, or for further enrolment enquiries you can contact the College on 3203 0066 (Rothwell Campus) or 5495 2444 (Caboolture Campus). SECURE YOUR PLACE AT GRACE!

Welcome to Grace Lutheran Outside School Hours Care. We look forward to caring for your child during school holidays and providing an environment where they can learn, relax and play. Our Service provides a caring, safe and secure environment for children and families from Grace Lutheran Primary School as well as the local community. Our Service aims to foster creativity and support co-operative learning through activities that are both fun and challenging. Our program is tailored to ensure all children’s interests and abilities are considered through a variety of recreational leisure activities. The ethos of our Vacation Care service supports and embraces the Christian values of Grace Lutheran Primary School. Our highly qualified staff members are experienced educators who will support your child’s interests and individual needs. All staff are qualified in accordance with the guidelines set in the Education and Care Services National Law (Queensland) Act 2011 and National Regulations.

Our Service operates according to the following children to staff ratios:

At the Service: 15 children to 1 Educator

Excursions: 10 children to 1 Educator

Fees and Charges

The cost of our Vacation Care service is as follows (before CCS applied):

$75 in-service day
$90 incursion day
$105 excursion day

We will issue statements each week via email, and accounts must be paid one week in advance.

  • Any cancellations made without 24 hours’ notice will incur the full cost of the day.

Hours of Operation Our Vacation Care Service operates from 7.00 am to 6.00 pm during school holidays and pupil free days. The Service will be closed on public holidays and for two weeks over the Christmas and New Year period.

Excursions

Excursions are considered an integral part of our Service, and we aim to provide a broad range of learning experiences for all children who attend. All excursion details will be outlined in the program, and a signed consent form is required to be completed for each child on the day of the excursion. The Risk Management Plan is also available for families to peruse prior to the excursion. On excursion days it is recommended that children arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time so they can be briefed on the details. For excursions, children are asked to bring a small backpack to store their food and any other personal items. All children who are enrolled for an excursion must attend the excursion on the day, as no staff members will remain at the school.

Transport

Unless otherwise advised in the program, our Service utilises the Grace Lutheran College buses to transfer children to and from excursion locations. All vehicles used in the transportation of children comply with the appropriate legislation, regulations and Transport Operations.

Clothing

During Vacation Care, we ask that children wear comfortable clothing that is suitable for the scheduled activities. If any unique clothing is required for certain activities, it will be noted on the program. The following guidelines should be adhered to:

  • Sun smart clothing (no sleeveless shirts).
  • Wide brim hats for outdoor activities.
  • Appropriate footwear (closed in shoes).
  • Change of clothes, depending on the activity.

 Food

Our Service does not provide food for your child. Children are required to bring their morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea each day. Children should also bring their water bottle. On some occasions, children may be provided with lunch, depending on the scheduled activity. Families will be notified of these days on the program.

Food Allergies

We currently have children enrolled who are allergic to nuts, pineapple, fish and shellfish. Our Service operates under a strict nut-free policy. Please ensure that you read all food labels when packing your child’s meals as peanut butter, Nutella and some muesli bars are not permitted.

Personal Effects

We understand that from time to time, children will bring personal items from home to play with during their time at our Service. We allow children to bring iPads and other electronic devices; however, please ensure a staff member is made aware so their use can be monitored. Families will also need to complete a Technology Agreement with their child for the use of electronics. Children are not permitted to have mobile phones at Vacation Care. If parents need to contact their child, they are encouraged to call the Service office or mobile number. No bikes or scooters are to be bought to the Service unless otherwise specified on the program. Please ensure all personal items are clearly labelled. Whilst every care is exercised, the Service assumes no responsibility for damage or loss to any item belonging to any person.

Tuckshop will be available in Week 3 of vacation care for order through Flexischools.

Excellence in Sporting news

Chase and Seb were selected to represent the Redcliffe District’s Under 12 Boys Softball team. Mrs Marks was the coach of the team and the team played in the Districts competition on June 1st & 2nd. The team finished top of the ladder and were undefeated the entire competition! They smashed it out of the park with a convincing 13-2 win in the Grand Final!!!

Chase was selected based off his performance to progress to the next level of competition for the Regionals Representative Competition in August. Outstanding effort Chase.

Well done Seb & Chase!

“Disney’s Aladdin JR. is based on the 1992 Academy Award winning film and the 2014 hit Broadway show about the “diamond in the rough” street rat who learns that his true worth lies deep within.

The story you know and love has been given the royal treatment! Aladdin and his three friends, Babkak, Omar, and Kassim, are down on their luck until Aladdin discovers a magic lamp and the Genie who has the power to grant three wishes. Wanting to earn the respect of the princess, Jasmine, Aladdin embarks on an adventure that will test his will and his moral character. With expanded characters, new songs, and more thrills, this new adaptation of the beloved story will open up “a whole new world” for your young performers!”

INTRODUCING KARLIEN

We are very excited to introduce to you the amazing educator who will be running the sensory music and movement playgroup sessions each week!! Karlien has a wealth of experience working with young children. She previously ran her own family daycare and after having her two beautiful children she looked for something she could do that would work with her young family but still be something she loved.

Karlien runs the Maggie Moo Music North Brisbane sessions. She fell in love with the music and sensory classes and absolutely loves hosting these for families. They are such a great way to connect with not only your child, but also other Mums, Dads, Carers, Grandparents etc.
We can’t wait for you to meet Karlien and come sing some songs and dance with us!

What’s happening in the library this week?

The lunchtime activity in the library this week, we made cardboard animal cut outs that we put together with paper fasteners so the legs, ears etc would move.

There were lots of different Australian animals to choose from and the kids had lots of fun putting them together.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

The library recently celebrated National Simultaneous Story Time. Every year on May 25th at 11:00am, a picture book, written and illustrated by Australians is read simultaneously across Australia in libraries, schools and children’s facilities across the country. This year the book is Family Tree, written by Josh Pyke and illustrated by Ronojoy Ghosh. Our children came together at 11am in our hall to listen to the story read to them by Mr Ricky Harper.  The children over the previous week have decorated paper hands celebrating their families, to place on our Grace family tree, which is on display at the entrance to the library. The children have been very eager to see their own hand design on display, so please feel free to come along and have a look.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

We also have Book Club that happens roughly every 4-5 weeks. Order forms will be sent to the classrooms and the ordering is done via LOOP on the Scholastic website and will be sent to the school for collection.  I’ll send out reminders just before ordering finalises to make it easier for you to remember to get your order in.

Book Club orders are due in by Monday June 6th, 10am.  Online LOOP orders only please, no cash will be accepted.

Book Fair will be happening later on this year with a chance to come to the library to purchase your special books, always great for birthday or Christmas gifts.

Book WeekCharacter dress up day is planned for 24th August. The theme this year is all about Dreaming with Eyes Open.  We will have fun with dressing up and special activities, so I hope all the kids will start to think about the costumes they would like to wear.  More information on this very special time will be coming soon.

Finally you can contact me via email on  library@glps.qld.edu.au for any concerns with overdue books or any other questions you may have.

If you have any questions throughout the year, you can email Peta at library@glps.qld.edu.au

Other ways you can help

There are also four great ways that you can help your young people come on camp:

  • School Subsidy

If you don’t have a subsidy code yet, please complete this form to apply for a code that you can hand out to your young people before they book.

  • Buchholz Estate Funding Support

Buchholz is a scholarship funded by the Buchholz Estate. This scholarship is specifically for high-school aged campers. For more information on the application process, eligibility or to access the application form, please click here.

  • LLL Junior Camping Ministry Grant

The Junior Camp Scholarship is thanks to a generous grant from the Lutheran Laypeoples League (LLL). This scholarship is specifically for primary school aged campers. For more information on the application process, eligibility or to access the application form, please click here.

  • Help us find leaders (of all ages!)

I’m not sure if you were expecting to see this one on the list? All too often we have to limit the amount of campers we can allow on a camp because of our struggle to find enough leaders. Having leaders from their local school or church join campers on camp provides a beautiful opportunity to build intergenerational connections. And, we aren’t just looking for young adults to lead on camp, we’re looking for people of any age who are passionate about sharing Jesus with young people. Older adults, parents, pastors, and grandparents are vital for bringing more wisdom and experience to team, to support both the campers and younger leaders, all while building a supportive Christian community.

If you’d like any more information about these events, head to www.lyq.org.au or contact our office on 07 3511 4080…we’re more than happy to help!

Peace,

LYQ Events Team
