From the Principal

 National Lutheran Principals’ conference

“Last week I attended the National Lutheran Principals’ conference in Adelaide. South Australia.  For those South Australians amongst us, it was actually held at Hahndorf with a session at Tanunda.  What a beautiful, historic part of the world.  We learnt about the first Lutherans who came to South Australia in the 1800s and settled in the Adelaide hills to farm.  What was the first thing they did?  They built a school for the children.

This comes back to Martin Luther’s teaching of over 500 years ago where the education of both boys and girls was seen as an imperative in their faith development.  Luther believed that all children should be taught how to read and that the Bible should be accessible to them and in their language.  The Lutheran heart beats deeply in the Adelaide hills.  As we drove back to the airport on the last day of the conference the stories of the women who used to walk into the Adelaide markets to sell the produce their husbands had farmed resonated as it is steep and certainly not easy land to navigate.

It was a true blessing to hear a plenary talk by retired Principal from Grace Lutheran College, Mrs Ruth Butler who talked about how important our Lutheran imperatives are in our schools.  She acknowledged Grace Lutheran Primary School and its new Early Learning Centre as the newest centre in the Lutheran system of schools – such excitement!

Of course we had other lectures about contemporary education and staff well-being and these were important but the true blessing was sitting in St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hahndorf or St Michael’s church in Tanunda and hearing about those first, dedicated Lutherans who brought God’s word to their community and valued education so highly.”

INTRODUCING KARLIEN

We are very excited to introduce to you the amazing educator who will be running the sensory music and movement playgroup sessions each week!! Karlien has a wealth of experience working with young children. She previously ran her own family daycare and after having her two beautiful children she looked for something she could do that would work with her young family but still be something she loved.

Karlien runs the Maggie Moo Music North Brisbane sessions. She fell in love with the music and sensory classes and absolutely loves hosting these for families. They are such a great way to connect with not only your child, but also other Mums, Dads, Carers, Grandparents etc.
We can’t wait for you to meet Karlien and come sing some songs and dance with us!

Other ways you can help

There are also four great ways that you can help your young people come on camp:

  • School Subsidy

If you don’t have a subsidy code yet, please complete this form to apply for a code that you can hand out to your young people before they book.

  • Buchholz Estate Funding Support

Buchholz is a scholarship funded by the Buchholz Estate. This scholarship is specifically for high-school aged campers. For more information on the application process, eligibility or to access the application form, please click here.

  • LLL Junior Camping Ministry Grant

The Junior Camp Scholarship is thanks to a generous grant from the Lutheran Laypeoples League (LLL). This scholarship is specifically for primary school aged campers. For more information on the application process, eligibility or to access the application form, please click here.

  • Help us find leaders (of all ages!)

I’m not sure if you were expecting to see this one on the list? All too often we have to limit the amount of campers we can allow on a camp because of our struggle to find enough leaders. Having leaders from their local school or church join campers on camp provides a beautiful opportunity to build intergenerational connections. And, we aren’t just looking for young adults to lead on camp, we’re looking for people of any age who are passionate about sharing Jesus with young people. Older adults, parents, pastors, and grandparents are vital for bringing more wisdom and experience to team, to support both the campers and younger leaders, all while building a supportive Christian community.

If you’d like any more information about these events, head to www.lyq.org.au or contact our office on 07 3511 4080…we’re more than happy to help!

Peace,

LYQ Events Team

What’s happening in the library this week?

This week in the library we celebrated National Simultaneous Story Time. Every year on May 25th at 11:00am, a picture book, written and illustrated by Australians is read simultaneously across Australia in libraries, schools and children’s facilities across the country. This year the book is Family Tree, written by Josh Pyke and illustrated by Ronojoy Ghosh. Our children came together at 11am in our hall to listen to the story read to them by Mr Ricky Harper.  The children over the previous week have decorated paper hands celebrating their families, to place on our Grace family tree, which is on display at the entrance to the library. The children have been very eager to see their own hand design on display, so please feel free to come along and have a look.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Book Club

Issue 4 of Book Club is out this week.  Ordering must be done online via LOOP by Monday June 6th at 10am. Cash will not be accepted at school. After 10am, ordering for free delivery to school will be closed and any purchases after that time will have a charge through Scholastic for delivery to your home.
Happy reading!

______________________________________________________________________________________________

 On loan

This week in the library we are exploring toys from years ago.

We have on loan a Memory Box from the Redcliffe Museum. It has a selection of toys and old books now on display for the children to look at and touch and so far has been very popular. Of particular interest has been the knucklebone game set made out of real bones. Also postcards, some over 100years old have fascinated some of the kids, especially the ones that are written on.

Please feel free to come and have a look if you are interested.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

We also have Book Club that happens roughly every 4-5 weeks. Order forms will be sent to the classrooms and the ordering is done via LOOP on the Scholastic website and will be sent to the school for collection.  I’ll send out reminders just before ordering finalises to make it easier for you to remember to get your order in.

Book Fair will be happening later on this year with a chance to come to the library to purchase your special books, always great for birthday or Christmas gifts.

Book Week theme this year is all about Dreaming with Eyes Open.  We will have fun with dressing up and special activities, so I hope all the kids will start to think about the costumes they would like to wear.  More information on this very special time will be coming soon.

Finally you can contact me via email on  library@glps.qld.edu.au for any concerns with overdue books or any other questions you may have.

If you have any questions throughout the year, you can email Peta at library@glps.qld.edu.au
