Sport at Grace Lutheran Primary School

Some of my favourite days at Grace are the NISSA round robin days and the sport carnivals organized so spectacularly by Mr Mace.  I love them because I see so many of our students come to school with sheer joy on their faces at the prospect of having a full day of sporting activities.  I talk to staff prior to any ‘sport’ day about how for some students this is their day to excel and just enjoy a day of pushing themselves physically to the limits of what their bodies can achieve. For some of these students, every day of academia is difficult and challenging so for them to shine at an activity at school is a joy to see.

Contrary to what some people think, school sport is actually mostly about learning, not winning.  Not that we don’t encourage children to try to win, but the winning in not the main goal.  It is trying to win that is the main goal, but there are many others as well, such as:

  • Learning to win graciously
  • Accepting loss with dignity
  • Learning to be competitive without hating
  • Learning to respect an umpire’s decision
  • Learning to accept a team-mate’s mistakes, and your own mistakes as well

This year, Miss Alisha Tobler and Mr Solomon Mace supported by Mel Whiddett commenced two Saturday netball teams.  I went along recently to see one of the teams compete and was truly impressed by the tenacity of the girls playing and their skillfulness due to the excellent coaching they were receiving.  Miss Tobler, whose passion for netball is exciting to witness, told me that one of the girls in the team told her that she always talks her mother into her having NISSA days off but this year she can’t wait to be part of the netball team because she loves playing so much.  Two things sprung to my mind when I heard this story, the first being that a child had not played NISSA sport in 2 years which I thought was very sad but also, without Miss Tobler’s influence she would not have begun a possibly life long enjoyment of a sport outside of school.

Talking to families I am always impressed at the commitment of parents to school sport and also out of school sport. Some families due to siblings in different age levels are at training every night of the week and spend all day and sometimes part of Sundays too competing and enjoying sport. Thank you to the parents for your commitment because you are developing life long attitudes and joy which can only come from playing in team sport.

GLPS Students will be introduced to a new program in PE thanks to SRV Baseball Australia! In this program, students are introduced to the basics of baseball and softball through engaging in skill development drills and engaging in a game known as Rally Cap Baseball. The Rally Cap program is run by fully accredited coaches who have many years experience in baseball with the main aim to have fun while learning the basic skills of hitting, throwing, fielding and general athletic movement.

If your child would like to continue playing Rally Cap Baseball, see below for a flyer for outside school sessions run at Grace College.

ABOUT PLAYGROUP

Kicking off in 2022 we were very excited to have our playgroup up and running.

With small group sizes, a large classroom and play areas for our little ones, playgroup is able to go ahead. There are so many families out there wanting to connect and enjoy a fun activity with their child and other Mums, Dads and Carers so we are very happy that our playgroup can be offered for you. These class sessions are a great way to connect with your child and other families. Each week the children will be engaging in fun and exciting music and activities that are specifically designed to stimulate their senses through movement and music, crafts and arts and sensory play.

We are very excited to introduce to you the amazing educator who will be running the sensory music and movement playgroup sessions each week!! Karlien has a wealth of experience working with young children. She previously ran her own family daycare and after having her two beautiful children she looked for something she could do that would work with her young family but still be something she loved.

Karlien runs the Maggie Moo Music North Brisbane sessions. She fell in love with the music and sensory classes and absolutely loves hosting these for families. They are such a great way to connect with not only your child, but also other Mums, Dads, Carers, Grandparents etc.
We can’t wait for you to meet Karlien and come sing some songs and dance with us!

Welcome back to term 3.

Hope you all enjoyed a wonderful holiday and now looking forward to some exciting things at Grace this term.

In our library, the big celebration will be Book Week coming up in August.  Time to start thinking about your costumes, who you’ll be and what you can make. It happens to be one of my favourite times of the school year, so I’m looking forward to enjoying it with all of you. There will be activities and fun things to do, but I’ll talk more about that as we get a little closer to the event.

This week, Book Club Issue 5 has been sent to all classrooms.  With this issue, Scholastic Book Club is offering some free books for all families with orders over $30.00.  Orders must be done via LOOP and the final day and time for ordering online for free delivery to school, is August 1st 3:00pm.  Please remember that cash orders will not be accepted at school.

Happy reading,

Peta Griffin

____________________________________________________________________________________________

We also have Book Club that happens roughly every 4-5 weeks. Order forms will be sent to the classrooms and the ordering is done via LOOP on the Scholastic website and will be sent to the school for collection.  I’ll send out reminders just before ordering finalises to make it easier for you to remember to get your order in.

Book Fair will be happening later on this year with a chance to come to the library to purchase your special books, always great for birthday or Christmas gifts.

Book WeekCharacter dress up day is planned for 24th August. The theme this year is all about Dreaming with Eyes Open.  We will have fun with dressing up and special activities, so I hope all the kids will start to think about the costumes they would like to wear.  More information on this very special time will be coming soon.

Finally you can contact me via email on  library@glps.qld.edu.au for any concerns with overdue books or any other questions you may have.

If you have any questions throughout the year, you can email Peta at library@glps.qld.edu.au
